In a recent interview with Saturday Sun, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, reflected on the ongoing turmoil surrounding the Kano emirate. He expressed empathy towards deposed Emir Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and others affected by recent legislative changes, acknowledging their sense of loss and hurt.

Sanusi attributed the root of the current conflict to actions taken several years ago, specifically Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s decision to create additional emirates within Kano State. This move, according to Sanusi, disrupted longstanding traditions and historical continuity of the emirate system, which had remained unchanged for over a millennium.

“When Ganduje wanted to create these Emirates, he could not find a law to amend,” Sanusi stated, highlighting the controversial nature of the legislative amendments used to justify the creation of new emirates such as Bichi, Rano, and Gaya. These changes, he argued, upended centuries-old norms and divided the unified Kano Emirate into multiple entities, each with its own jurisdiction.

The recent legal battles and subsequent dethronements, including that of Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, have sparked widespread debate and legal challenges. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s actions reinstating Sanusi and deposing Bayero have intensified the conflict, leading to further legal maneuvers and public outcry.

Sanusi stressed that the decisions made were not personal attacks but efforts to preserve the cultural and historical integrity of the Kano Emirate. He emphasized the need to protect the emirate’s legacy, even as the political landscape

In conclusion, Sanusi urged unity among the people of Kano and members of the royal family, emphasizing the importance of understanding the broader implications of recent events on the emirate’s future.

The dispute continues to unfold amidst legal proceedings and public demonstrations, underscoring the deep-rooted significance of traditional leadership in Kano State.
