The flood, caused by heavy rainfall leading to the collapse of the Alau Dam on the Ngadda River, has resulted in Borno’s worst flooding in three decades. At least 30 lives were lost, and over one million people have been affected. The floodwaters inundated homes and public infrastructure, forcing many residents to flee their homes. Additionally, the flooding caused significant environmental hazards, including the destruction of the state-owned zoo, which led to crocodiles and snakes being washed into flooded communities.

As a result of the flood, the Gomboru drug market in Maiduguri was also severely impacted. Floodwaters compromised drugs in the market, leading the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to order its immediate closure after reports surfaced that some vendors were attempting to sun-dry and resell the contaminated drugs.

The Borno State government, with the support of these generous donors, is focused on providing immediate relief to the flood victims and embarking on rebuilding efforts in the affected areas. The financial and material contributions are expected to provide much-needed assistance as the state works to recover from this natural disaster.
