The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised serious concerns over the National Universities Commission (NUC)’s ineffective regulation and monitoring of admission quotas for professional courses in universities across Nigeria. This negligence has led to significant challenges for students and graduates, particularly in professional fields like Medical Laboratory Science (MLS).

Universities Exceeding Admission Quotas

NANS, through a statement issued by its Senate President, Comrade Akinteye Afeez, highlighted the troubling trend of universities admitting more students into professional programs than they can adequately train. This practice violates the guidelines established by respective professional bodies and has left many students unable to complete the necessary steps to obtain their professional licenses.

The Dire Consequences for Students

The statement emphasized the severe implications of this malpractice. For instance, many MLS graduates, despite completing their studies up to seven years ago, have not been able to write their professional exams or gain indexing. This situation has left them in a professional limbo, unable to pursue careers in their chosen field despite investing significant time and resources into their education.

“This unacceptable situation has resulted in graduates being unable to work in their chosen fields, despite having invested years of their lives and substantial resources into their education,” the statement noted. “The inability to take professional exams not only hampers their career prospects but also wastes the potential contributions they could be making to society.”

Calls for Immediate Action

NANS has called on the NUC to take immediate and decisive action to enforce adherence to admission quotas set by professional bodies. The association stressed the need for universities to comply with these quotas to prevent the oversaturation of students in programs that cannot support their professional development and licensing.

“Furthermore, we demand that university managements comply with these quotas and prioritize the welfare and future of their students by ensuring they are only admitted into programs that can adequately support their training and professional licensing,” the statement urged.

A Call for Stricter Monitoring

The plight of MLS students is a stark example of the broader issues caused by ignoring professional admission quotas. These students have been unfairly treated and their futures jeopardized by the institutions meant to guide them toward successful careers. NANS stands in solidarity with these students and all others affected by such malpractices.

“NANS stands in solidarity with these students and all others affected by such malpractices. We urge the NUC to implement stringent monitoring and regulatory measures to safeguard the interests of all students,” the statement concluded.

Looking Forward

The call for the NUC to tighten its regulatory oversight and ensure strict compliance with professional admission quotas is a critical step towards protecting the interests of students and maintaining the integrity of professional education in Nigeria. As the NUC addresses these issues, it is essential for universities to align with these guidelines to foster a sustainable and equitable educational environment for all students.
