“The President directed that a cabinet committee be set up to oversee what the emergency operation center led by NCDC is doing and for the resources to be provided, complemented by the state government,” Pate stated.

The council discussed the ongoing efforts to control the cholera outbreak through a multisectoral approach aimed at reducing the infection rate and mortality. The newly formed committee includes members from the Ministries of Health, Finance, Water Resources, Environment, Youth, Aviation, and Education, reflecting the broad scope of the government’s response.

Minister Pate reported that as of now, 31 states have recorded 1,528 cholera cases and 53 deaths. This situation is part of the 7th global cholera pandemic, which has affected over 200,000 people worldwide in 2024.

“At the moment, about 31 states have recorded 1,528 cases and 53 deaths in Nigeria; that is what we are working on through the emergency operation center that NCDC activated on Monday,” Pate noted.

He highlighted the global nature of the cholera pandemic, pointing out that in 2022, nearly 500,000 cases were reported worldwide, and in 2023, the figure rose to almost 700,000. The World Health Organization has reported more than 200,000 cases this year alone, spanning five regions.

Pate underscored the importance of a multisectoral approach involving technical partners, various ministries, civil society organizations, and the public. This approach focuses on raising awareness, promoting handwashing and hygiene, improving sanitation, and providing medical treatment.

“Multisectoral approach is given with technical partners, other ministries such as water, environment, health, and CSOs contributing to that effort to ensure we contain them,” he added. “Resources were deployed to 21 states to help them respond to cholera. We are improving awareness of the population, handwashing, hygiene sanitation, in addition to treatment with drugs, intravenous fluids.”

In addition to the cholera outbreak, the council also addressed a new emergence of yellow fever, specifically in Bayelsa State. The government’s comprehensive approach aims to tackle both health crises through coordinated efforts and resource allocation.

The establishment of the cabinet committee marks a significant step in the federal government’s efforts to curb the cholera outbreak and protect the health of Nigerian citizens.
