In a recent development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State has leveled accusations against the state government, asserting that a staggering N20 billion has been recklessly expended within the first 100 days of the administration. This revelation comes as the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government marks its initial 100 days in power.
Alhaji Usman Bello-Suru, the State PDP Chairman, voiced these concerns in a statement released in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, scrutinizing the fiscal actions of the state government during its early days in office. In response, the government has vehemently dismissed these allegations, dismissing them as the futile attempts of a defeated opposition while highlighting its perceived accomplishments in the eyes of the state’s populace.

According to the PDP’s claims, a substantial portion of the funds was allocated towards the beautification of Birnin Kebbi, a move deemed extravagant given the substantial challenges faced throughout the state. Bello-Suru pointed out that these financial resources could have been channeled towards addressing longstanding issues such as poor road infrastructure in the Zuru emirate, affecting the lives of countless residents.
Moreover, the PDP’s allegations extend to the state Governor’s expenditures on domestic and international trips, which reportedly consumed nearly N2 billion, without significant contributions to human development. This spending has come under scrutiny as the state grapples with the displacement of over 10,000 citizens due to the persistent issue of banditry.
In a further indictment, the PDP has accused the government of directing substantial sums towards “white elephant projects” primarily centered in Birnin Kebbi’s local government area. The party has also raised concerns about the state’s health sector being neglected, the distribution of subpar fertilizer to farmers, the awarding of questionable contracts, and alleged administrative ineptitude.
The PDP’s central call is for the state government to prioritize addressing poverty, which continues to afflict the state’s population in various regions.
Responding to these allegations, Ahmed Idris, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, swiftly refuted the claims, asserting that the PDP is merely apprehensive about the remarkable transformations initiated by the APC-led government within its initial 100 days in office. Idris emphasized that many members of the PDP have shown support for the government’s policies and programs, acknowledging the positive impact of these endeavors.
The current dispute between the PDP and the Kebbi State government revolves around the alleged squandering of N20 billion in the first 100 days of the APC administration. As the political landscape in the state continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these accusations and counter-claims will affect the political climate and development agenda in Kebbi.
