In a bold ultimatum, the Guild of Sports Editors has demanded that both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board and Coach Finidi George resign if the Super Eagles fail to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The stern directive was issued due to the Super Eagles’ disappointing performance in the ongoing qualifiers, where they currently sit in fifth place in Group C.
The Guild, comprised of managers of sports departments in major media organizations across Nigeria, expressed deep concern over the team’s struggles. They criticized the NFF for its delayed actions, including the appointment of a coach just a month before the qualifiers began, which they deemed as a flawed process lacking proper procedures.

President of the Guild, Mr. Tony Ubani, emphasized that the situation is unacceptable, especially considering Africa’s increased slot allocation to nine countries for the World Cup. The Guild urged the NFF to take immediate action to salvage Nigeria’s chances of qualification.
Among the key issues highlighted by the Guild was the need for a complete overhaul of the NFF’s technical department. They stressed the importance of appointing individuals with sound technical knowledge of the game, rather than politically-motivated officials.
Furthermore, the Guild called for better financial management and resource allocation, urging the NFF to seek more corporate support for the Super Eagles’ preparations. They criticized the practice of including irrelevant stakeholders in the country’s delegation to matches, emphasizing the need to redirect funds to address the team’s needs.

In terms of player selection, the Guild urged the NFF to be more discerning and to only invite committed players to the national team. They called for an investigation into the attitudes of certain players towards the qualifiers and recommended reintroducing Skipper William Troost-Ekong to provide leadership to the squad.
In conclusion, the Guild of Sports Editors has set a clear ultimatum for the NFF and Coach Finidi George: ensure the Super Eagles’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup or face resignation. The call to action underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for immediate remedial measures to be taken.
