3 Key Reasons Why Tribunal Sacked Kano Gov Yusuf and Declared Gawuna Winner

In a groundbreaking decision that has sent shockwaves through Kano State’s political landscape, the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal has made a historic ruling. The tribunal has ordered the withdrawal of the certificate of return that was initially issued to Governor Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). Instead, it has directed that the certificate be issued to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr. Nasir Gawuna. This pivotal ruling is underpinned by three key reasons that have left an indelible mark on the gubernatorial race.

1. Membership Controversy:
One of the most pivotal reasons behind the tribunal’s decision was the dispute surrounding Governor Kabir Yusuf’s membership status. In a momentous revelation, the tribunal, led by Justice Oluyemi Akinatan-Osadebey, determined that Yusuf was not a valid member of the NNPP at the time of the governorship election. This discovery raised significant questions about the legitimacy of his candidacy and played a decisive role in the final verdict.

2. Overvoting Allegations:
Another substantial factor that weighed heavily on the tribunal’s decision was the allegation of overvoting during the election, particularly in favor of Governor Yusuf. Overvoting occurs when the number of votes cast exceeds the number of registered voters in a particular area. The tribunal found substantial evidence supporting these allegations, casting doubt on the fairness and integrity of the election results.

3. Invalid Votes Deduction:
The margin of lead between Governor Yusuf of the NNPP and Dr. Nasir Gawuna of the APC was a focal point of contention. The tribunal deemed this margin insufficient, as it was not greater than the number of cancelled votes. As a consequence, the tribunal made a significant decision by deducting 165,663 votes from Governor Yusuf’s total votes, declaring them invalid. These ballots were declared invalid because they lacked the necessary stamps or signatures, raising concerns about their authenticity.

In summary, the Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal’s decision to nullify Governor Kabir Yusuf’s victory and declare Dr. Nasir Gawuna as the winner represents a monumental moment in Kano State’s political history. With the issues of membership status, overvoting, and invalid votes at the forefront, this ruling underscores the imperative of upholding the principles of fairness, transparency, and credibility in electoral processes. As Kano State prepares to enter a new era under the leadership of Dr. Nasir Gawuna, these three key reasons will serve as the foundation upon which the state’s political future is built.
