9mobile subscribers may soon experience improved network coverage as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is expected to approve a national roaming and spectrum-sharing agreement between 9mobile and MTN Nigeria.
Once approved, the deal will allow 9mobile to utilize MTN’s extensive network infrastructure, addressing the connectivity challenges that have frustrated its 3.3 million subscribers. Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with service disruptions, with some unable to access calls or data for days.
The foundation for this collaboration was laid in 2020 when the NCC granted both telecom operators a three-month trial period for national roaming services. While the agreement has yet to receive final regulatory approval, sources close to the matter confirm that it is likely to be greenlit soon.

For 9mobile, this partnership is a crucial step toward restoring service quality following years of decline. The company, which recently came under the ownership of LH Telecoms Nigeria, has struggled to retain subscribers, witnessing a drop from 4.65 million users to 3.28 million.
Under the agreement, MTN will also benefit by gaining access to 9mobile’s spectrum holdings, including the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz bands. With MTN already serving over 84 million subscribers, this arrangement aligns with its broader strategy of offering “network as a service.”
When implemented, the deal is expected to enhance service quality for 9mobile users, allowing them to make calls, send messages, and browse the internet more seamlessly across Nigeria.
