Boeing 737 with 59 Passengers Crash-Lands in Kano, Nigeria

Max Air has confirmed that one of its aircraft crash-landed at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on Tuesday night after losing its nose landing gear tire during touchdown.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the airline assured the public that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated without injuries. The aircraft was removed from the runway by 4:28 a.m., but the runway remains temporarily closed for inspection, causing potential flight delays.

The Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into the incident. Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs, stated that a team has been on-site since the night of the incident to collect evidence, with findings expected soon.

Max Air Suspends Domestic Flights for Three Months

Following the incident, Max Air announced a temporary suspension of its domestic flight operations for three months, effective from midnight, January 31, 2025. The airline stated that this decision will allow for an internal review of its operations to enhance safety measures.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the suspension, emphasizing that the NSIB investigation will determine the cause of the accident.

Recurring Safety Concerns

This marks the second emergency landing involving a Max Air aircraft in less than two months. On December 5, 2024, an engine fire forced a Max Air flight to return to Maiduguri shortly after takeoff, carrying nearly 80 passengers, including Borno State Deputy Governor Usman Kadafur.

Additionally, in May 2023, a Max Air aircraft crash-landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, causing panic among passengers. In July 2023, the NCAA suspended Max Air’s Boeing 737 operations over safety concerns.

What’s Next?

Max Air’s engineering team is working closely with aviation authorities to address safety concerns. Passengers with existing bookings are advised to check for updates regarding flight schedules and possible rescheduling.
