The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has justified the delay in releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, emphasizing the need for fairness and credibility in the assessment process.
John Kapi, Head of Public Relations at WAEC, explained that the delay is due to ongoing investigations into alleged examination malpractice. Speaking on Eyewitness News on February 4, 2025, he assured that the council is committed to ensuring that only deserving candidates receive their results.
“We need to sit down and probably bring on board a number of stakeholders to decide on this issue so that we are awarding grades to people who deserve them,” Mr. Kapi stated.
However, the delay has sparked concerns among students and education stakeholders. The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has issued a one-week ultimatum demanding the release of all withheld results, threatening nationwide protests if WAEC fails to comply. Additionally, the union has called for the removal of WAEC Ghana’s leadership, citing unfair treatment of students accused of malpractice.
With tensions rising, WAEC remains firm in its position, prioritizing fairness and integrity over speed. The coming days will determine whether the council’s stance will ease tensions or escalate student-led demonstrations.
