The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has introduced new requirements for business owners who want to update or change their business name online. These changes are designed to strengthen verification, improve accuracy, and reduce errors on the registration portal. If you’re planning to modify your business name, this guide breaks down every step clearly so you can complete the process without delays.
Step 1: Log in to the CAC Registration Portal
Visit the official CAC portal: https://pre.cac.gov.ng/login
Sign in with your registered email and password. If you don’t have an account, create one using a valid email and phone number.
Step 2: Check the New Guidelines
Before starting the update, review CAC’s latest instructions on the portal dashboard. The new guidelines usually require:
• Valid ID of proprietor
• Date of birth exactly as it appears on ID
• Proprietor email and registered office email
• Phone number
• Proof of address where necessary
Step 3: Conduct a Name Availability Search
If you are changing the business name itself, use the “Name Search” option to check availability.
If the name is available, reserve it and keep the availability code (AV CODE).
If the name is taken, try another approved variation.
Step 4: Prepare All Required Documents
Have these ready before filing:
• Scanned valid ID (NIN slip, Passport, Driver’s Licence)
• Proof of address (utility bill or tenancy document)
• Completed affidavit if the update involves change of ownership
• CAC/BN forms (if the system prompts you)
• AV Code for name reservation (if applicable)
Step 5: Fill the Business Name Update Form
Go to “Business Name” on your dashboard and select “Update Business Name.”
Fill in all required fields carefully, especially:
• Date of birth
• Emails
• Phone numbers
• New business name (if changing it)
Upload all required documents in clear PDF or JPG format.
Step 6: Pay the Filing Fee
You will be redirected to make payment via Remita or integrated card/transfer options.
After payment, keep your payment receipt for record purposes.
Step 7: Submit and Monitor Your Application
Once submitted, CAC may review your application within hours or days.
If they raise a query, you will be notified on your dashboard and email.
Respond quickly and upload any missing documents to avoid delays.
Step 8: Receive Your Updated Document
When approved, CAC will issue the updated business name document.
Download and store it safely. You may also need it when updating:
• Bank account records
• Tax information
• Business verification platforms
• Vendor or contract profiles
