After Moving Some CBN Departments to Lagos, President Tinubu Announces Relocation of FAAN Headquarters from Abuja to Lagos

In a significant administrative reshuffle, President Tinubu has directed the relocation of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters from Abuja to Lagos. This decision comes on the heels of the Central Bank of Nigeria’s move to transfer some of its departments to Lagos, as revealed in an internal memo obtained by Sunday PUNCH.

The circular, dated January 15, 2024, was issued by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, following a directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo. The minister instructed the immediate provision of the implications of the relocation to the management.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, initially established in 1976 as the Airports Authority of Nigeria, saw a reformation in 1995, leading to its renaming and realignment of functionalities. The authority, responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of all federal airports, had its headquarters in Lagos until 2020 when President Muhammadu Buhari relocated it to Abuja.

In a related development, the Central Bank of Nigeria has initiated a decongestion action plan, as disclosed in an internal memo, to transfer some of its departments to Lagos. The move is aimed at optimizing the operational environment, ensuring compliance with building safety standards, and enhancing office space utilization.

Despite reports of resistance from some bank staff, who claimed tribal sentiment as the motivation, an unnamed official from the apex bank stated that the decision was made for “staff safety and increased productivity.” The decongestion plan also seeks to align the bank’s structure with its functions, redistribute skills for a more even geographical spread of talent, and comply with building regulations.

As both key institutions undergo significant relocations, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact their operations and the broader economic landscape.
