Airtime, Data Prices Rise as NCC Approves 50% Tariff Increase

Nigerians will soon pay higher charges for airtime and data as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved a 50% increase in telecom tariffs. The adjustment follows requests by telecom operators to review rates due to rising operational costs.

NCC spokesperson Reuben Muoka, in a statement on Monday, explained that the decision is based on Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, and followed extensive consultations with stakeholders in the telecom industry.

“The approved adjustment aims to bridge the gap between increasing operational costs and the existing tariff structure while ensuring that consumers continue to receive quality services,” Muoka stated. He noted that while operators initially sought an increase of over 100%, the NCC limited the adjustment to 50% in light of ongoing reforms in the sector.

The last adjustment in telecom tariffs occurred in 2013, and since then, telecom companies have faced rising costs that have not been matched by tariff reviews. The NCC believes the new rates will support providers in sustaining operations, improving network coverage, and fostering innovation.

As the new tariffs take effect, consumers will pay more for data bundles and airtime across all network providers. The NCC assured the public that the increases would be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to maintain fairness and balance in the market.

This development highlights the challenges telecom operators face in balancing operational costs with service delivery, as Nigerians prepare for higher communication expenses.
