Aliero Loses Out as Nwadkwon Emerges Minority Leader in Senate Upset

In a surprising turn of events, Senator Simon Davou Nwadkwon of the Plateau North constituency has outmaneuvered notable ranking senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to secure the minority leader position in the Senate. Fresh details have emerged regarding the behind-the-scenes dealings and power struggles within the PDP that led to this unexpected outcome.

Prior to the Senate’s resumption from recess, there were several meetings among PDP senators and party stakeholders to determine the minority leader and finalize the list of nominees to be put forward. However, during a crucial meeting called by the Acting National Chairman of the party, both the chairman and the newly appointed minority leader were absent, leaving others perplexed and confused about the situation.

Reports indicate that a former South-South governor made significant efforts to ensure his preferred candidate assumed the minority leader role instead of the party’s choice, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, the immediate past governor of Sokoto State. The absence of the minority leader at the meeting, without any apology, raised suspicions that a hidden agenda was at play.

These developments caused tensions among PDP senators who were aware of the discrepancies between the party’s resolution and the announcement made on the Senate floor. To solidify the emergence of the new minority leader, a deal was allegedly struck with Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, which led to the hasty executive session preceding the announcement of the opposition’s names.

Interestingly, a letter from the PDP, dated July 3, 2023, was disregarded. The letter notified Akpabio that the party was still deliberating on the minority leadership and had not reached a conclusion. However, during the Senate session on Tuesday, July 4, Senator Nwadkwon was announced as the Senate minority leader, along with other positions for the minority parties, disregarding the party’s ongoing consultations.

The selection of principal officers from the minority parties saw a significant shift in power, sidelining prominent figures such as Senator Abdul Ningi, former Senate Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Adamu Aliero, former Senate leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, and former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal.

Before Nwadkwon’s emergence, there were speculations and joint statements from ranking senators vowing to resist any attempt to impose leadership on them. However, Senator Nwadkwon’s unexpected rise to the position of minority leader sidelined these influential senators.

In an interview with ARISE TV, Senator Nwadkwon shed light on his emergence, emphasizing the North Central region’s desire for fair representation. He clarified that there was no personal conflict with Senator Tambuwal, acknowledging Tambuwal’s support for his candidacy during the Senate session.

The surprising turn of events in the Senate’s minority leadership has shaken the political landscape, revealing internal power struggles and highlighting the significance of regional representation. As Senator Nwadkwon assumes his new role, the Senate faces the challenge of maintaining unity and cohesion among its members while navigating the intricacies of political dynamics within the opposition parties.
