In a call for mutual understanding and compromise, the Most Reverend Dr. Henry Ndukuba, Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has urged the federal government and labor unions to reach an amicable resolution in the ongoing minimum wage discussions. Speaking during an Episcopal visit to the Cathedral Church of Advent in Abuja, Archbishop Ndukuba stressed the critical need for a peaceful resolution to avoid exacerbating the country’s economic woes.

Archbishop Ndukuba emphasized the severe economic challenges currently facing Nigerians, highlighting that families are already struggling to meet their basic needs. He urged both the federal government and the labor unions, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), to consider the broader implications of their demands and actions.

The labor unions are advocating for a new minimum wage of N615,000, a proposal the government finds difficult to meet due to economic constraints. The Archbishop warned that a significant increase in the minimum wage could trigger inflation, worsening the living conditions of many citizens. He called for a balanced approach that supports labor’s needs while considering the government’s fiscal limitations.

“As we navigate the complex issue of minimum wage, we must remember that our country is facing numerous economic challenges,” said Ndukuba. “Families are struggling to make ends meet, and we are in danger of being dehumanized. If we demand a minimum wage that causes inflation to spiral out of control, we will end up causing maximum suffering.”

He prayed for a peaceful resolution and encouraged both parties to be considerate and reasonable in their demands. Ndukuba’s appeal for peace and justice resonated with the congregation, emphasizing that Nigeria’s path to stability lies in equitable solutions that serve the entire population.

The Anglican Communion also observed Pentecost Sunday with a special service led by Primate Ndukuba, who underscored the importance of supporting the next generation, particularly the boy child, whom he described as an ‘endangered species’ needing care and nurturing.
