Another two 330KV Kainji-Birnin kebbi Transmission towers brought down last night

Recently, there was a brought down of 3 Towers at Yauri at the beginning of this month.

29th May, 2025.

Two more high-voltage transmission towers on the 330KV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi line have collapsed following a strong windstorm in Kebbi State. The incident occurred late on Tuesday night, 28th May 2025, at Galadima Village in Shanga Local Government Area.

This marks the second major tower collapse in the state this month, raising serious concerns over the stability of power infrastructure in northern Nigeria. Earlier in May, three towers were brought down in Yauri, disrupting electricity supply across parts of the region.

Details of the Incident

According to local reports, a violent windstorm swept through the Galadima area on Tuesday night. Residents woke up to discover that two massive towers had fallen. These towers are part of the crucial 330KV power line connecting Kainji to Birnin Kebbi, a backbone for electricity supply in northwestern Nigeria.

The collapse has led to fresh outages and reduced power transmission to Kebbi and surrounding states, worsening the already fragile electricity situation in the region.

Growing Concerns Over Power Stability

This is the second attack by nature on the same power line this month. On May 3rd, three towers were destroyed in Yauri, just a few kilometers away. The recurring collapses have sparked fears about the durability of the country’s electricity infrastructure, especially in storm-prone areas.

Experts are urging the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other relevant authorities to investigate whether the current tower designs can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Impact on Electricity Supply

With a total of five transmission towers down in a single month, power supply to major parts of Kebbi State and neighboring areas has been affected. While emergency teams are being deployed, it may take days—or even weeks—before full transmission is restored.

Small businesses, homes, and critical institutions such as hospitals are feeling the pressure, relying heavily on generators and alternative sources for power.

What Needs to Be Done?

To prevent further collapses, stakeholders have called for urgent reinforcement of the existing power infrastructure. There are also growing calls for early warning systems, especially in rural areas, to protect both lives and assets during high-impact weather events.

Improving maintenance strategies and engineering resilience against natural disasters may be the key to long-term stability of Nigeria’s power grid.
