Arewa Youth Council Calls for North West Zoning of Senate Presidency in 10th National Assembly

National Assembly (Senate Presidency)

The Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria has called on newly-elected senators to zone the position of the Senate President to the North West for the sake of equity and fairness. The group’s president, Isah Abubakar, made the appeal during a news conference in Kaduna on Thursday. He argued that since the president-elect comes from the southern part of the country, it is only right for the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to zone the number three position in the country to the North West.

Abubakar premised his demand on the fact that the North West gave APC the highest vote of 2,884,132, which represents about 32% of the total votes gained by the party in the 2023 presidential election. He believes that this performance should be adequately rewarded for the sake of unity, peace, progress, and national cohesion.

The North West region of Nigeria is one of the six geopolitical zones in the country, comprising seven states, namely, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and Jigawa. The region has been a stronghold of the APC since the party’s formation in 2013. It is also the home region of the outgoing Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

The Senate President is the third-highest ranking official in the Nigerian government after the President and Vice President. The position is critical in the country’s political structure as the Senate is the upper chamber of the National Assembly, responsible for making laws, approving appointments, and conducting oversight functions. The Senate President presides over the affairs of the Senate and determines its agenda.

The call by the Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria is not the first of its kind. Similar demands have been made in the past, with some arguing that the position should be rotated among the six geopolitical zones to ensure balance and inclusivity in the country’s political structure.

However, the decision on who becomes the Senate President ultimately rests with the senators-elect, who are expected to choose their leaders based on merit, experience, and competence. It is, therefore, essential for the incoming senators to prioritize the interest of the country above personal or regional interests in making this critical decision.

In conclusion, the call by the Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria for the Senate President’s position to be zoned to the North West is understandable given the region’s contribution to the APC’s victory in the 2023 presidential election. However, the decision on who becomes the Senate President should be based on merit, experience, and competence rather than regional or personal interests. The incoming senators must, therefore, make a conscious effort to choose a leader that will promote unity, peace, progress, and national cohesion.
