The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology (KSUST) has raised alarms over severe underfunding, warning that the institution may face collapse if these issues are not addressed. During a press conference in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, ASUU Chairman Dr. Abubakar Umar detailed a litany of challenges plaguing the university, ranging from decaying infrastructure to unpaid academic allowances.

Infrastructure Decay and Poor Working Conditions
Dr. Umar pointed out that the university’s infrastructure is in a deplorable state, adversely affecting both staff and students. Lecturers face inadequate accommodation and insufficient office space, while students suffer from a lack of proper hostels, forcing many to live off-campus in Jega or Birnin Kebbi. This situation compromises both teaching and learning environments, hindering academic progress.
Non-payment of Academic Allowances
A significant grievance is the non-payment of earned academic allowances for over 11 years. Dr. Umar stressed that the delay in implementing promotions—sometimes taking up to a year—has driven more than 20 skilled academic staff to leave the university. This exodus of talent further strains the institution’s capacity to deliver quality education.

Power Supply and Research Challenges
The lack of reliable electricity is another critical issue, with frequent power outages disrupting laboratory research and rendering technical equipment idle. This not only hampers productivity but also stifles the university’s potential for academic research and innovation.
Healthcare and Security Concerns
The university clinic’s lack of a resident doctor since its inception poses a severe risk to the health and well-being of both staff and students. Furthermore, security remains a significant concern, with past incidents including the kidnapping of a lecturer and threats against others, creating an environment of fear and instability.
Call for Government Intervention
Dr. Umar appealed to the Kebbi State government to urgently address these pressing issues to prevent the collapse of the state’s only university. He expressed hope that the state administration, under the leadership of the governor, would act swiftly to resolve these problems and ensure the university’s sustainability.

Government Response
In response, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Abubakar Tunga, denied the allegations but declined to comment on specific issues such as unpaid academic allowances and promotion implementations. He suggested that journalists visit the university to observe the conditions firsthand.
Conclusion
The situation at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology is a stark reminder of the broader challenges facing higher education institutions in Nigeria. Without prompt and adequate funding, these institutions risk severe decline, affecting the future of thousands of students who rely on them for education and opportunities. The call for intervention is not just a plea for immediate relief but a demand for sustainable solutions to ensure the long-term viability of Nigeria’s educational infrastructure.
