ASUU Rejects TETFund Proposal to Include Private Universities in Interventions

In a recent development, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has voiced its strong opposition to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) proposal to extend its projects to private universities in Nigeria. The ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, expressed this position during a two-day interactive session between TETFund and all unions of beneficiary institutions.

Professor Osodeke argued that allowing private universities to benefit from TETFund projects would potentially result in the proliferation of private educational institutions lacking the necessary quality standards. Instead, he urged TETFund to prioritize enhancing its monitoring methods to ensure that the projects it supports are executed effectively.

One of the key issues raised by Professor Osodeke was the disparity in the performance of beneficiary institutions. Some of them receive the same amount of funding, despite varying levels of performance. This inconsistency, he believes, warrants a closer examination and possible adjustments to ensure that funds are allocated more equitably.

Furthermore, the ASUU President called on TETFund to impose sanctions on non-performing institutions to encourage them to improve their educational standards. He also advocated for the abolition of what he referred to as the “stakeholders fund.”

In his remarks, Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, emphasized that the purpose of the interactive session was to foster steady growth and development in tertiary education. He stressed the importance of continuous engagement and mutual challenges to find ways to enhance the education system in the country.

Echono highlighted TETFund’s primary mandate, which is to rehabilitate, restore, and consolidate tertiary education in Nigeria by providing funding and project management support. The interactive session aimed to facilitate discussions on mitigating industrial disputes in the tertiary education sector and exploring ways to prevent and avoid future occurrences.

ASUU’s opposition to TETFund’s proposal and their commitment to ensuring quality education in Nigerian tertiary institutions was made clear by the ASUU President, who concluded by stating, “ASUU will continue to embark on a strike until the right thing is done in our tertiary institutions.”
