The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised alarm bells, threatening to embark on a nationwide strike if the Nigerian government fails to disburse the allocated N170 billion from the 2023 budget aimed at revitalizing universities and addressing critical concerns within the educational sector.

In a recent press briefing held in Lagos, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya, the ASUU Coordinator for the Lagos Zone, underscored the urgent need for increased government investment and attention towards public universities.

The ASUU Lagos Zone, which encompasses prominent institutions such as the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State University (LASU), and others, highlighted unresolved issues including the non-allocation of agreed revitalization funds despite their inclusion in the 2023 Budget.

Prof. Odukoya also addressed concerns over the unchecked expansion of federal and state universities without adequate financial backing, protracted delays in renegotiating the 2009 Agreement, and the continued reliance on the controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) for salary payments.

Additionally, the union pointed out ongoing delays in receiving Earned Academic Allowances, the utilization of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) for university operations, incomplete payment of eight months’ worth of withheld salaries, failure to reinstate ASUU officials dismissed from LASU five years ago, and the non-disclosure of the university’s white paper from the 2021 Visitation Panel.

ASUU also criticized the “No-Work No-Pay” policy enforced by the previous administration, resulting in extended periods without salary for lecturers. Despite a partial salary payment, the union deemed it inadequate in light of the prevailing economic challenges.

Prof. Odukoya appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address these issues to prevent another disruptive strike. ASUU called for support from the media, labor movement, student organizations, and civil societies to strengthen efforts aimed at improving Nigeria’s public university system.

The looming threat of a strike by ASUU underscores the pressing need for immediate action by the government to prioritize the revitalization of universities and address the concerns raised by the academic staff, ensuring the continued progress and development of Nigeria’s higher education sector.
