Atiku Blasts Tinubu, Asks Him to Explain Why Oando Got Swift Approval in AGIP/ENI Deal

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has sharply criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, questioning the rapid approval granted to Oando Plc for the acquisition of AGIP and ENI’s onshore assets. Atiku’s comments came in response to what he describes as an uneven application of regulatory processes in the Nigerian oil and gas sector.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Atiku, through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, accused the Tinubu administration of a “sham subsidy regime,” alleging that the President has misled the public regarding the removal of fuel subsidies. According to Atiku, despite Tinubu’s claims of subsidy removal, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has acknowledged a staggering debt of N7.8 trillion owed by the government.

Atiku further criticized the House of Representatives for its perceived inaction on the NNPCL, which he claims has compromised national oil assets by catering to vested interests. He suggested that the accelerated approval of Oando’s deal, achieved within just eight months, stands in stark contrast to the protracted delays experienced by other transactions, such as Shell/Renaissance and Mobil/Seplat deals, which continue to face bureaucratic obstacles.

The former Vice President also pointed to President Tinubu’s foreign visits, including trips to New York, Qatar, and France, where he allegedly misrepresented the situation regarding petrol subsidies. Atiku contends that these actions reflect a broader failure of Tinubu’s administration to attract foreign direct investment and address ongoing issues in the oil sector. He criticized the administration for not addressing the lingering petrol scarcity and the perceived frustration of critical projects like the Dangote Refinery and NNPCL facilities.

Atiku’s statement also touched on broader concerns about governance under Tinubu, highlighting rising human rights abuses. He noted several incidents involving the unlawful detention of journalists and whistleblowers, such as Bristol Tamunobiefiri, as evidence of a troubling trend of enforced disappearances. Atiku warned that these issues could lead to international sanctions and further damage Nigeria’s reputation.

Atiku Abubakar’s remarks underscore his call for greater transparency and accountability within the current administration. He urges the government to address these pressing issues to prevent further erosion of public trust and potential international repercussions.
