The Bankers’ Committee is on the cusp of completing the extensive renovation and upgrading of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos. This significant development was announced during a media parley and tour of the revamped National Theatre complex in Lagos.

The renovation project, which began in July 2021 following the Federal Government’s approval and subsequent handover of the historic edifice to the Bankers’ Committee, aims to restore the theatre to its former glory.

A New Era for the National Theatre

Speaking on the Bankers’ Committee’s restoration efforts, Segun Agbaje, Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc. (GTCo), highlighted the importance of providing a platform for Nigeria’s talented individuals in entertainment and the arts. “I don’t think there are many countries in Africa that have the talent that we have in entertainment and the arts. All you can do when you have talented people is to give them a platform to showcase their best,” Agbaje said. “We will try to give a platform where Nigerians, who are in my opinion the best, have a chance to show the world that they are the best.”

Unlocking Opportunities for the Youth

The Committee’s renovation project is more than just a facelift for the National Theatre. By rejuvenating this iconic asset, the Bankers’ Committee aims to unlock numerous opportunities for youth in the creative sector. This includes job creation, income generation, and foreign exchange generation. The ultimate goal is to develop a vibrant creative and entertainment center that also provides much-needed community spaces for Nigerians.

Historical Significance

The National Theatre holds a special place in Nigeria’s cultural history. Constructed during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon and completed in 1976 by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, the theatre was a key venue for the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC 77) in January 1977.
