South Africa is the top English-speaking nation in Africa, with a remarkable position in the ‘Very High Proficiency’ category globally. It has a score of 605, which places it among nations renowned for their linguistic abilities, such as the Netherlands, Singapore, and Austria.
Kenya and Nigeria have secured a prominent position in the ‘High Proficiency’ category on the global stage. Kenya has achieved a ranking of 19, while Nigeria is ranked at 27. These rankings indicate their commendable linguistic skills, which reflects their dedication to English language education and proficiency.

Ghana and Uganda further solidify Africa’s standing in the realm of English fluency, achieving respectable positions in the ‘Moderate Proficiency’ category. Ghana, ranked 34th globally, and Uganda, positioned at 47, showcase their dedication to linguistic advancement and cross-cultural communication.
The top 5 English-speaking African countries of 2023, based on the EPI rankings, are as follows:
- South Africa – Global Ranking: 9, Score: 605
- Kenya – Global Ranking: 19, Score: 584
- Nigeria – Global Ranking: 27, Score: 562
- Ghana – Global Ranking: 34, Score: 537
- Uganda – Global Ranking: 47, Score: 529
Although these five nations are at the forefront in terms of English language proficiency, it’s important to recognize the efforts of other African countries in promoting linguistic diversity. Throughout the continent, countries such as Tunisia, Tanzania, and Ethiopia contribute to this diversity, although their levels of proficiency vary from moderate to very low.
