Nigerian crossdresser and social media influencer Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, has taken legal action against Martins Vincent Otse, popularly referred to as VeryDarkMan, for defamation. The lawsuit, valued at ₦1 billion, was announced on Bobrisky’s Instagram account on Sunday and centers around an AI-generated audio clip that allegedly accuses Bobrisky of engaging in illicit relationships with high-ranking politicians and law enforcement officials.
Bobrisky’s legal team claims that VeryDarkMan’s statements, made in a series of viral videos, are both false and damaging. The lawsuit specifically notes that these accusations were made without evidence, with Bobrisky’s lawyers stating: “In your quest for social media stardom, you have continued to exploit our client’s name and influence for personal gain.”
The suit further asserts that these defamatory claims have been made with disregard for Bobrisky’s mental health and constitutional rights, including his right to privacy and freedom of thought. Bobrisky is seeking damages for what the lawsuit describes as a “reckless” and “unfounded” smear campaign against him.
The case raises significant questions about the intersection of social media influence, privacy rights, and the potential legal implications of AI-generated content in Nigeria’s evolving digital landscape.
