ASUU Declares Indefinite Strike at Sokoto State University Over Unresolved Issues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Sokoto State University branch, has embarked on an indefinite strike due to the failure of the university administration and the state government to address longstanding concerns.

The strike, which took effect on Wednesday, is described as total and comprehensive, shutting down all academic activities in the institution. According to ASUU, the decision follows a lack of commitment from the university’s governing council and state authorities in resolving the union’s grievances.

Academic Activities Halted

During a congress meeting held at the Centre for Caliphate Studies, union members reviewed the government’s response to their demands and expressed dissatisfaction with the level of engagement. Consequently, ASUU announced the immediate suspension of all academic operations, including lectures, examinations, supervision of students, marking, and grading of scripts.

To ensure full compliance, the union activated its strike monitoring committee, which will oversee the enforcement of the directive.

Union’s Stand on the Strike

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting confirmed the resolution, which was signed by ASUU-SSU Chairperson, Dr. Saidu Abubakar, and Secretary, Hassan Aliyu. The union emphasized that the strike would continue until all outstanding issues are resolved by the relevant authorities.

The indefinite strike at Sokoto State University adds to the growing concerns over frequent disruptions in Nigeria’s higher education sector, with ASUU repeatedly calling for better funding, improved working conditions, and adherence to agreements reached with the government.
