BREAKING: ASUU Declares Nationwide Strike, Decries “No Pay, No Work” Policy

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a nationwide strike over the federal government’s failure to pay June 2025 salaries to lecturers in various federal universities across the country.

In a statement released on July 8, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, confirmed that branches such as the University of Jos and University of Abuja have already suspended academic activities in line with the union’s “No Pay, No Work” policy. He added that other branches are expected to join as long as their members remain unpaid.

The union attributed the salary delay to the transition from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). However, ASUU insisted that the delay was not a technical issue but a deliberate attempt by the Office of the Accountant General to frustrate lecturers.

ASUU also renewed its demand for the immediate release of the remaining ₦10 billion from the ₦50 billion earlier promised for Earned Academic Allowances (EAA). The union says only ₦40 billion has been disbursed so far.

Prof. Piwuna warned that if the government fails to resolve the salary issue before the end of July, the union will be forced to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.

The development has sparked concern among students, parents, and university staff, who fear another prolonged disruption in academic activities.
