The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government of Nigeria, warning of an imminent strike if their demands are not met. This announcement was made during an emergency press conference held at the ASUU Secretariat of the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State.
Comrade Salim Ahmed, Chairperson of the ASUU FUD Branch, highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that members of the Expanded Executive Officers of ASUU at FUD met on June 19, 2024, to discuss the Union’s ongoing issues with both Federal and State governments. These efforts are aimed at addressing the persistent problems affecting Nigerian public universities.

Ahmed expressed frustration that since the current administration took office on May 29, 2023, it has consistently ignored ASUU’s leadership. Despite numerous attempts by the Union to initiate dialogue and collective bargaining, as recommended by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the government has remained unresponsive.

A critical issue is the renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU 2009 agreement, which covers important aspects such as members’ welfare, university autonomy, and funding for the revitalization of Nigerian universities. Ahmed also pointed out the government’s failure to address the illegal dissolution of governing councils in Federal and State universities and the non-release of seven months of outstanding salaries owed to ASUU members for work already completed.
Other key issues raised by ASUU include the immediate release of unpaid salaries for members on sabbatical and adjunct positions, which have been delayed due to the inadequacies of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). The Union is also demanding the prompt release of third-party deductions by IPPIS, payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) to deserving members, implementation of recommendations from visitation panel reports, and the replacement of IPPIS with the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

In response to the government’s perceived unwillingness to resolve these issues, ASUU has decided to mobilize its members for potential industrial action. Ahmed stated that the Union is committed to informing parents and stakeholders about the current situation in university education. He urged the general public to be aware of the true state of affairs and called on well-meaning Nigerians to pressure the government to address these outstanding issues promptly. Failure to do so, he warned, could lead to an “unnecessary and avoidable industrial crisis” within the already frail university system.
As ASUU’s three-week ultimatum approaches its deadline, the Union’s call for immediate action from the government underscores the critical need for dialogue and resolution to prevent further disruption in the academic calendar of Nigerian public universities.
