Kano, Nigeria – In a landmark decision, the Federal High Court in Kano has ordered the Kano State Government to pay ₦10 million in compensation to the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, for the violation of his fundamental human rights. The court ruled that the house arrest ordered by Governor Abba Yusuf was unlawful.
Justice Amobeda, who presided over the case, declared the governor’s order illegal and stressed the importance of protecting individual liberties as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution. The lawsuit, filed by Emir Bayero, aimed to enforce his fundamental human rights, culminating in this significant judgment.

The case involved several high-profile respondents, including the Attorney General of Kano State, the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police Kano State, the State Security Service (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Navy, and the Nigerian Airforce. Justice Amobeda specifically restrained the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th respondents from any actions that could further infringe upon Bayero’s rights.
Abdulrazak Ahmad, counsel to Emir Bayero, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, emphasizing the recognition of the infringement on his client’s rights. Conversely, the respondents’ counsel, Ibrahim Wangida, also indicated their acceptance of the judgment.

However, the court denied the plaintiff’s request for the cost of filing and prosecuting the case, citing insufficient pleading and proof for the claimed amount.
This ruling follows another significant judgment by Justice Liman Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Kano, which affirmed Bayero’s right to be heard in an ongoing emirate dispute. Additionally, a Kano State High Court had ordered substituted service on Bayero and four other emirs in a related case filed by the Kano State Government.
