The Ebonyi State Government has announced a significant salary boost for its workforce, raising the minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦90,000. Governor Francis Nwifuru made this decision after the State Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
According to the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Ikeuwa Omebe, the adjustment is not politically motivated but a genuine effort to support workers amid rising living costs. He explained that the new wage structure applies to all categories of civil and public servants in the state.
Omebe also revealed that the administration has cleared outstanding pension and gratuity arrears for retirees since Ebonyi’s creation in 1996. Verification of local government retirees is currently in progress to ensure they also benefit from cleared payments.
In addition to the wage increase, the council approved an eight-year tenure policy for directors and permanent secretaries. Under this policy, any officer who has served in such positions for eight years must retire, allowing younger officers to rise within the service.
With this new minimum wage, Ebonyi becomes one of the leading states in Nigeria offering the highest pay to workers, further strengthening Governor Nwifuru’s pledge to prioritize welfare and reward productivity.
