BREAKING: Federal College of Education Gusau Resumes After 3-Month Strike

The Federal College of Education Technical (FCET) in Gusau, Zamfara State, has resumed academic activities following a three-month strike by the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU). The strike, which had disrupted academic programs, was suspended unconditionally after a prolonged meeting among union members.

In a statement following the meeting, union member Muktar Abdullahi expressed apologies to parents, guardians, and students for the inconvenience caused by the strike. Abdullahi highlighted that the decision to call off the strike was made unconditionally after resolving the pertinent issues within the college.

Recently, the coalition of Zamfara State civil societies and well-wishers organized a protest addressing what they termed the union’s anti-progress stance. Alhaji Nasiru Garba, speaking on behalf of the coalition, expressed solidarity with Hajiya Hauwa’u Mukhtar Abdul Karim, the substantive provost of FCET Gusau. Abdul Karim is noted for being the first female and indigenous provost since the institution’s establishment in 1988.

Garba criticized certain union members for allegedly undermining the college’s administration, suggesting that some academic staff preferred to maintain control by having the institution led by acting caretakers rather than a substantive provost. He argued that this practice hindered the college’s progress. Garba called on the federal government and the Minister of Education to facilitate the transfer of COEASU members to other federal colleges of education. He emphasized that this move would support the institution’s growth and allow the provost to continue her commendable work.

The resumption of academic activities marks a significant step forward for the Federal College of Education Technical Gusau, aiming to restore normalcy and progress within the institution.
