
The Federal Government has announced plans to disburse ₦54.850 billion as part of its conditional cash transfer programme, targeting 2.191 million vulnerable Nigerians before the end of August 2025.
This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Tanko Sununu, during an interview with Channels Television on Monday.
According to the minister, the initiative is designed to provide immediate relief to households facing economic hardship, with beneficiaries selected from the National Social Register managed by the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO).

₦419bn Already Disbursed Nationwide
Sununu revealed that the government has so far disbursed ₦419 billion to about five million Nigerians under the rapid conditional cash transfer scheme. He explained that the disbursement has not been evenly spread across the country, as 71 percent of the funds were distributed in the North, while 21 percent went to the South.

Speaking on the upcoming phase, the minister confirmed that the fresh disbursement of ₦54.850bn would begin in a matter of days.
“In the next few days, before the end of August, we are going to reach out to 2.191 million households across the country,” Sununu stated.
He further stressed that the government remains committed to transparency and accountability in the process, ensuring that only the most vulnerable households benefit from the initiative.
Part of Poverty Reduction Strategy
The federal government noted that the cash transfer programme is part of its broader poverty reduction strategy, aimed at cushioning the effects of inflation, unemployment, and rising living costs on ordinary Nigerians.
Officials also emphasized that while the scheme provides temporary relief, it is being implemented alongside long-term social and economic reforms to support sustainable development.
