The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the recall of Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap (100g), specifically batch number 81832M 08, produced in Germany, due to the presence of a harmful chemical impurity, Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), also known as Lilial. This chemical has been associated with serious health risks, particularly reproductive harm, and is banned under cosmetic regulations in several countries, including the European Union.
BMHCA, which is often used as a fragrance in cosmetic products, has been linked to potential damage to the reproductive system and poses risks to unborn children. Additionally, it can trigger skin sensitization, causing allergic reactions in some users. Due to these risks, it has been prohibited from use in cosmetics, and its presence in Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap has raised significant concerns.

NAFDAC, in its official statement, urged consumers to stop using this product immediately. The agency also advised importers, distributors, and retailers to ensure the product is withdrawn from the market. In Nigeria, soaps like the recalled Dove product fall under the restricted and import prohibition list, which prohibits their importation. This recall underscores the importance of vigilance in ensuring that harmful products do not circulate within the Nigerian market.

The recall extends beyond Dove Beauty Cream Bar Soap. Several other Dove products, including Derma Spa Goodness, Men Care, Nourishing Body Care Light Hydro, Go Fresh, and Pampering Body Lotion, have been banned or recalled in various countries due to the presence of BMHCA. NAFDAC emphasized the need for consumers to exercise caution and report any adverse reactions experienced from using such products.
NAFDAC also noted that the recalled products are not registered in its database, further warning the public against the illegal importation and sale of such items. The agency continues to monitor the market for any unregulated or harmful products and encourages healthcare professionals and consumers to report any negative side effects encountered while using regulated products.
In addition to reporting through NAFDAC’s local offices, the public is encouraged to use the agency’s electronic reporting platforms or the Med-safety app, which is available for both Android and iOS devices.
