In a statement released by NAFDAC’s Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, the agency urged all stakeholders across the food supply chain to actively promote food safety practices that prevent contamination risks. NAFDAC also pointed to a recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO), which reveals that annually, one in ten people suffer from foodborne illnesses globally, leading to approximately 420,000 deaths. Furthermore, the report notes that unsafe food costs developing nations around $110 billion in medical expenses each year.

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reinforced the agency’s commitment to instilling a culture of food safety, ensuring Nigerians receive guidance to avoid practices that might jeopardize their health. She emphasized that food safety is a shared responsibility, spanning from production to consumption, with everyone in the food chain playing a critical role in preventing foodborne illnesses.

With the upcoming 2024 World Food Safety Day, Adeyeye noted that the WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) are challenging stakeholders to address unexpected threats to food safety, encouraging proactive measures to manage food risks effectively. The campaign highlights the importance of vigilance, emphasizing the need for everyone—from farmers to consumers—to ensure food safety at every stage.

Through these initiatives, NAFDAC hopes to foster greater public awareness on the potential dangers of storing cooked food beyond the recommended time, promoting safer food handling practices to protect public health.
