In a dramatic turn of events, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike set to commence on Monday, June 3rd, 2024. The decision comes after the tripartite committee, comprised of labour leaders, government officials, and representatives of the organised private sector, failed to reach an agreement on a new minimum wage. Adding fuel to the fire, the hike in electricity tariffs has further aggravated the situation, leading to the labour unions’ drastic move.
The President of the TUC, Festus Osifo, made the announcement during a joint press conference with NLC leadership in Abuja on Friday. Osifo expressed frustration over the Federal Government’s inability to conclude negotiations for a new minimum wage by the end of May, as previously requested by the labour unions.

“In light of this persistent inaction, we, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), hereby issue a notice of commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike to the Federal Government,” Osifo declared. “We reiterate that since the National Minimum Wage negotiation exercise has not been concluded and the agreed wage passed into law; the hike in electricity tariff has not been reversed and the categorization of consumers into Bands has not stopped as demanded; Nigerian workers are compelled by these failures to embark on an indefinite nationwide industrial action beginning on Monday, the 3rd of June, 2024 to press home our demands.”

The strike declaration follows the unions’ withdrawal from earlier negotiations and their rejection of two Federal Government offers, the latest being N60,000. The labour unions are steadfast in their demand for a new minimum wage of N497,000, citing the skyrocketing cost of living in Nigeria, which has worsened following the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira.
The removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira have significantly impacted the cost of living, prompting heightened calls for a new minimum wage. In response to these economic challenges, labour leaders have proposed several measures, including a new minimum wage and alternative modes of transportation, to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on Nigerian workers.
Despite multiple meetings, the tripartite committee has been unable to reach a consensus on the new minimum wage, leading to the current impasse and the labour unions’ decision to strike. The Federal Government has yet to issue a response to the TUC and NLC’s announcement.
