Breakdown of NYSC’s New Allowance Expenditure

The increase in corps members’ stipends aligns with Nigeria’s new minimum wage law, signed in May 2024. With NYSC mobilizing around 333,000 corps members annually in three batches—Batch A, B, and C—the financial impact is significant:

• Corps Members Per Batch: 111,000 (average)
• Total Allowance Per Batch: ₦25.64 billion
• Total Annual Allowance: ₦307.6 billion

In the 2025 budget proposal, President Bola Tinubu allocated ₦430.7 billion to NYSC, the highest in five years. Out of this, ₦372.9 billion was designated for corps members’ allowances, making up 86.5% of the total NYSC budget.

Why Has the New ₦77,000 Payment Been Delayed?

Despite the budget allocation, corps members have yet to receive the increased allowance. According to the NYSC’s Acting Director of Press and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the delay is due to the lack of “cash backing” from the federal government.

“The cash backing is still being awaited,” she confirmed in a statement.

Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the newly appointed NYSC Director-General, reportedly assured corps members that payments would begin in March 2025. However, as of now, there has been no official communication confirming the exact payment date.
