In a recent development, the Presidency has ruled out any chance of Betta Edu, the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, returning to President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. This decision was disclosed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, during an interview on Sunday in Abuja.
Edu, who was suspended in January over allegations of misappropriating N585 million in palliative funds, has reportedly been replaced in the cabinet by another appointee. Onanuga confirmed that the government has moved on and currently has no intention of reinstating her in the president’s administration.
“There is another person from Cross River in the cabinet. Betta is gone,” Onanuga stated, emphasizing that the administration has filled her position with a new appointee from Plateau State. “Her position has been taken over by somebody else. As far as this government is concerned, there is no more place for her in that cabinet.”
Suspicion of EFCC Findings
When asked about any findings from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Onanuga explained that while the anti-graft agency has not publicized any conclusions, President Tinubu’s decision to leave Edu out of the cabinet suggests that the EFCC may have provided critical details to the presidency, warranting her continued exclusion.
“If you follow what the president has done, it means EFCC has revealed something that formed the basis of the president’s action,” he noted.
Background of the Allegations
Edu faced significant public scrutiny earlier this year when a leaked memo exposed her directive for a large fund transfer to a private account, raising concerns about financial improprieties. The alleged misappropriation of N585 million in palliative funds sparked criticism, particularly after it was revealed that funds were used for flights and taxis for ministry staff to Kogi State, which lacks an airport. Oluwatoyin Madein, the Accountant-General of the Federation, later clarified that she did not authorize the requested transfer, further fueling the controversy surrounding Edu’s actions.
The EFCC has since launched an investigation, though no formal charges have been made public. However, the lack of charges does not appear to be swaying the presidency’s decision, signaling that Edu’s suspension will likely remain permanent.
