The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has denied rumours circulating on social media claiming that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates was cancelled.
In an official statement released by its Public Affairs Department and signed by Moyosola Adesina, Head of Public Affairs, WAEC confirmed that the examination was not cancelled and that results will be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
According to WAEC, a fake press release had gone viral online, alleging that WAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education had cancelled the 2025 WASSCE due to widespread exam malpractice and the digital leakage of question papers.
WAEC dismissed the report as false and misleading, stating clearly that it did not come from the Council.
“The attention of WAEC, Nigeria, has been drawn to a press release alleging the cancellation of the just-concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025,” the statement read.
“The WAEC Management would like to state unequivocally that the fake press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council. The said examination has not been cancelled. As a matter of fact, the marking of the scripts has just been concluded, and results will be released on or before August 4, 2025.”
WAEC advised the public to ignore the fake report and rely only on information from its verified social media accounts and accredited media platforms. It also reminded the public that only the Public Affairs Department of WAEC, on behalf of the Head of the National Office, is authorized to issue official press statements.
Federal Ministry of Education Also Reacts
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education has also debunked the false report, describing it as baseless and aimed at causing public panic.
The Ministry clarified that:
- It did not cancel the WASSCE or any other public examination.
- There was no joint directive or agreement with WAEC regarding any cancellation.
- The 2025 NECO examination is ongoing nationwide as scheduled.
The Ministry urged students, parents, and education stakeholders to disregard the fake report and follow only trusted government communication channels for updates.
