BREAKING: Yahaya Bello Fails to Appear in Court Again for Alleged N80.2 Billion Fraud

Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, has once again missed his court appearance in connection with charges of alleged fraud totaling N80.2 billion. Scheduled to face trial at the Federal High Court in Abuja today, Bello was notably absent, prompting a heated exchange between legal representatives.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed a 19-count charge against Bello and others, accusing them of conspiracy and money laundering offenses under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011. Despite his absence, Bello’s counsel, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, clarified that they were prepared for the hearing and blamed the EFCC for seeking an adjournment.

Adedipe stated that the EFCC had initially agreed that today’s date would not be convenient, leading to confusion when EFCC lawyer Rotimi Oyedepo unexpectedly appeared in court. Senior counsel Kemi Pinhero, SAN, had also communicated the inconvenience of the date beforehand.

The court has now rescheduled the hearing for June 27, following the EFCC’s request for an adjournment.

The charges against Bello and his co-defendants, Ali Bello, Dauda Suliman, and Abdulsalam Hudu (who remains at large), involve allegations of converting funds obtained through criminal breach of trust and other unlawful activities.
