In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court has affirmed Governor Nasir Idris’s victory in the Kebbi State gubernatorial election. The dismissal of the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Aminu Bande, solidifies Governor Idris’s position as the valid winner, in alignment with decisions from the Court of Appeal and the Kebbi State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.
The election, initially declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) due to irregularities, saw a conclusive outcome after a supplementary election on April 15. Governor Idris, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured 409,225 votes, surpassing PDP’s Bande, who garnered 360,940 votes.

Despite the PDP’s dissatisfaction, both the tribunal and the Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Governor Idris. The courts emphasized the lack of substantiated evidence for allegations, including forgery against Deputy Governor Abubakar Tafida. Additionally, issues of non-compliance with the Electoral Act were deemed insufficient to impact the election outcome significantly.
This Supreme Court decision provides a conclusive legal resolution to the electoral dispute, affirming Governor Nasir Idris’s mandate in Kebbi State.
