In a decisive verdict, the Supreme Court has upheld the election of Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Governor of Lagos State. The ruling, delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba, dismisses an appeal filed by Mr Rhodes-Vivour, cementing Sanwo-Olu’s position as the duly elected leader of Lagos.
The apex court, in its judgment on January 12, deemed the appeal unmeritorious, providing a clear endorsement of the electoral process that led to Sanwo-Olu’s victory. The rejection of the appeal by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP) affirms the legitimacy of the governor’s mandate.

Crucially, the Supreme Court also affirmed the eligibility of Deputy Governor Femi Hamzat to contest the election. Justice Garba clarified that Hamzat’s dual citizenship, including his acquisition of United States citizenship, does not negate his Nigerian citizenship, emphasizing his status as a citizen by birth.
This ruling puts to rest any legal challenges against the Sanwo-Olu administration, reinforcing the credibility of the democratic process. The court’s decision underscores the commitment of the judiciary to upholding the rule of law and maintaining the integrity of electoral outcomes.
