Empowering Journalists to Combat Misinformation in Anglophone West Africa
In an effort to combat the rising tide of misinformation and disinformation in Anglophone West Africa, DUBAWA, Africa’s prominent verification and fact-checking platform, has officially opened the call for applications for its 2024 Kwame Karikari Fact-Checking Fellowship. This initiative, now in its sixth edition, aims to amplify media literacy and empower journalists to become staunch advocates for information verification in grassroots communities.

Fellowship Objectives
The fellowship, inspired by the urgent need to address political, social, and cultural misinformation, specifically targets journalists from television, online media, radio, and print based in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, or The Gambia. The program seeks to:
- Foster media literacy among journalists.
- Empower journalists from grassroots communities.
- Encourage fact-checking in indigenous languages.
- Strengthen the fight against misinformation and disinformation.

Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Full-time employment with a media organization.
- Residency in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, or The Gambia.
- Exceptional writing skills.
- Ability to translate stories from English to an indigenous language.
- Dedication to fellowship activities, events, and meetings.
- Commitment to fact-checking during the 2024 general election for Ghana and other election-observing countries.
- Managerial buy-in from their newsroom for fact-checking initiatives.
- Encouragement for female journalists, journalists with disabilities, and those knowledgeable in climate and conflict reporting.
- Fluency in indigenous languages across the targeted countries.
Knowledge and experience in fact-checking are not required, emphasizing inclusivity and a willingness to train and mentor journalists.
Fellowship Details
- Duration: Six months.
- Training and mentorship: Technical training and one-on-one project mentorship by DUBAWA’s fact-checking team.
- Support: Assistance in establishing fact-checking desks in newsrooms.
- Publishing: Fellows expected to publish projects on their media platforms and DUBAWA’s platforms.
- Promotion: Fellows to promote fact-checking on social media, radio, or TV platforms.
- Impact: Monitoring reach, audience engagement, and readership to measure the impact of the work done.

Application Process
The call for applications is open until February 16, 2024. Shortlisting of applicants will take place from February 16-19, and the training workshop for selected applicants is scheduled for February 26-29. The fellowship program officially commences on March 1, 2024.
