CAN Urged to Question Prophets over Failed Prophecies on Peter Obi

Peter Obi of Labour Party

Political analysts and observers in Nigeria have been left bemused by recent comments made by prominent figures on social media. The comments, made by Reno Omokri and Doyin Okupe, have ignited a fierce debate online, with many calling for further investigation into the prophetic words spoken about Nigeria’s future leaders.

Omokri, a former aide to the ex-president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, took to Twitter to express his concerns about the upcoming presidential election. He called on the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to challenge the prophets who had predicted that Peter Obi would be the next president. He also expressed his hope that the Supreme Court would prevent the inauguration of Bola Tinubu, a popular politician in Nigeria.

In response, Okupe, a former senior adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, argued that prophecy is not always factual but a foretelling of future events. He cited the biblical passage that states, “we prophesy in part” (1 Corinthians 13:9-12) to support his argument.

The debate sparked by these comments highlights the deep-seated mistrust many Nigerians have in their political leaders and institutions. Many see the prophetic words spoken by religious leaders as a form of guidance and reassurance in times of uncertainty. However, when these words fail to come to pass, it can lead to disillusionment and a loss of faith in both the religious leaders and the political system.

The call by Omokri for CAN to question the prophets who made these predictions is a step in the right direction. It is important for religious leaders to be held accountable for their actions and words, particularly when they have a significant impact on the beliefs and actions of their followers.

Finally, the debate sparked by the comments of Omokri and Okupe highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s political and religious institutions. Only then can Nigerians begin to rebuild trust in their leaders and institutions and work towards a brighter future for their country.
