Beijing is hosting the highly anticipated 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) from September 4 to 6, welcoming African leaders for high-level discussions with President Xi Jinping. This summit, the ninth since the forum’s inception in 2000, comes at a crucial time as China seeks to strengthen its ties with Africa amidst growing competition with Western nations.
The summit’s theme, “Joining Hands to Advance Modernisation and Build a High-Level China-Africa Community with a Shared Future,” underscores Beijing’s ambition to deepen its economic and diplomatic relationships across the continent. Central to these discussions will be agreements on industrialization, agricultural development, and security, all within the broader context of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

For China, this summit is more than just an opportunity to bolster trade and investment; it is a strategic move to secure access to Africa’s vast mineral resources. Countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe, and Botswana are rich in critical minerals such as lithium, copper, and cobalt—resources essential to China’s growing renewable energy sector.
In return, African nations will seek to negotiate better terms for these resource extractions, including more refined processing of raw materials within their borders, which could lead to increased revenue and job creation for their rapidly growing populations.
The 2024 FOCAC summit is also a significant diplomatic platform for China. By hosting a large number of African leaders, Beijing aims to solidify its influence at the United Nations, leveraging the collective voting power of these nations to further its global agenda.
As the summit unfolds, all eyes will be on the deals and partnerships that emerge, which will shape the trajectory of China-Africa relations for years to come.
