For China, this summit is more than just an opportunity to bolster trade and investment; it is a strategic move to secure access to Africa’s vast mineral resources. Countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Zimbabwe, and Botswana are rich in critical minerals such as lithium, copper, and cobalt—resources essential to China’s growing renewable energy sector.
In return, African nations will seek to negotiate better terms for these resource extractions, including more refined processing of raw materials within their borders, which could lead to increased revenue and job creation for their rapidly growing populations.
The 2024 FOCAC summit is also a significant diplomatic platform for China. By hosting a large number of African leaders, Beijing aims to solidify its influence at the United Nations, leveraging the collective voting power of these nations to further its global agenda.
