CNG Criticizes Lack of Democratic Progress After 25 Years in Nigeria

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has expressed deep concerns over the state of democracy in Nigeria as the nation commemorates 2024 Democracy Day. In a statement released by Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the national coordinator, the CNG lamented that democracy has failed to deliver its promised benefits to Nigerians after 25 years.

Despite Nigeria’s vast natural and human resources, the CNG noted that the country continues to grapple with severe poverty and economic instability, conditions that were less pronounced during military regimes. The group highlighted alarming statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which reported that 63% of Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, with over 133 million people affected. Additionally, unemployment has soared to 33.3%, with youth unemployment exceeding 50%.

Educational accessibility has also deteriorated significantly, with the number of out-of-school children rising from 7.4 million in 1999 to 18.5 million in 2024. The CNG pointed to widespread corruption, job racketeering, contract inflation, and kickback collection as critical factors undermining the civil service and overall governance.

The CNG argued that these economic and social challenges stem from years of mismanagement and a lack of genuine commitment to national development by political elites. The group called for sober reflections and a renewed commitment to addressing these issues to fulfill the true potential of Nigeria’s democracy.
