The Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in Kano has expressed concern over the allocation of contracts to unqualified contractors who lack the necessary equipment to execute projects. Ali Abdu, the Acting Federal Road Maintenance Engineer in the state, highlighted this issue during his appearance before the House Committee on FERMA. He informed the lawmakers about the agency’s activities regarding 2023 contract projects.
Abdu pointed out that some contractors lack competence and basic equipment such as shovels, yet they receive contracts worth millions of naira. He also mentioned the challenges faced by the agency, including a shortage of operational vehicles for supervision purposes.

In terms of the condition of federal roads in Kano, Abdu stated that out of 990 kilometers, 423 are in good condition, 502 are in fair condition, 32 kilometers are in poor condition, and 33 kilometers are in bad condition. Despite the allocation of 16 contracts in the 2023 budget, only one contract pertained to a federal road. Of the 16 contracts, six have been completed, five are ongoing, one contractor has reported but has not commenced work, and four contractors have yet to report.
The House Committee on FERMA, led by Chairman Engr. Aderemi Abasi Oseni, engaged with Zonal Directors and Federal Road Maintenance Engineers (FRME) from the North West Zone I and II of the Agency to discuss their activities. Oseni commended the staff’s competence and expressed the committee’s commitment to supporting the agency in fulfilling its mandate.

Overall, the interactions between FERMA officials and the House Committee indicate a recognition of the agency’s achievements as well as a commitment to addressing existing challenges through legislative and administrative measures.
