Shafi’u Umar Tureta, an aide to former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, has been remanded in prison following allegations of insulting the current Governor Ahmad Aliyu on social media. Tureta appeared in a Sokoto magistrate court on Monday, where he faced charges including defamation and circulating false information. The court proceedings were held in secrecy, with journalists barred from attending.
The charges against Tureta relate to posts he allegedly made in July that mocked Governor Aliyu’s English proficiency and shared controversial videos. Among these, one video depicted the governor’s wife, Fatima, celebrating her birthday with dollar notes being sprayed, further fueling the controversy.
Tureta’s arrest occurred on Sunday when armed security personnel reportedly raided his home. Amnesty International has condemned the detention, labeling the charges as “unacceptable” and calling for Tureta’s immediate release. The organization criticized the Sokoto state government for prioritizing the suppression of dissent over addressing pressing social issues such as poverty and insecurity.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto has also condemned the arrest. PDP spokesperson Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal argued that sharing public videos of a governor should not be considered a crime and suggested that the footage likely originated from official sources. The PDP has criticized the administration for attempting to stifle freedom of expression.
This case underscores the ongoing tension between governmental authority and individual freedoms in Nigeria, highlighting the broader issues surrounding the limits of free speech and the right to criticize public officials.
