Controversial Nigerian social media personality Bobrisky, also known as Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment without the option of a fine by the Federal High Court in Lagos. The court’s decision, handed down by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, comes after Bobrisky pleaded guilty to four counts of abusing the Nigerian currency, the naira.
During the court proceedings, Bobrisky affirmed his gender identity as a man when questioned by the judge. Subsequently, he was ordered to serve his jail term at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, with the sentence retroactively starting from March 24, 2024, the day of his arrest.

The charges against Bobrisky included instances of tampering with and abusing various sums of money issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) during social gatherings. These acts of naira abuse, as outlined in the counts presented by the prosecution, were found to be in violation of the Central Bank Act of 2007.

Justice Awogboro emphasized that the judgment serves as a deterrent to others who engage in similar practices of abusing and mutilating the naira. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are regarded within the Nigerian legal system.
Although the sentencing was initially scheduled for last Thursday, it was postponed due to the declaration of a public holiday for the Eid-El-Fitri celebration by the Federal Government.
