Crocodiles, Snakes, and Others Take Over as Flood Ravages Zoo and Houses in Maiduguri

In a devastating turn of events, severe flooding has wreaked havoc across Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, displacing thousands of residents and causing dangerous animals, including crocodiles and snakes, to escape into residential areas. The flood, which primarily affected neighborhoods near Shehu Kyarimi Park (Zoo) and the bustling Monday Market, has created a terrifying environment as wildlife has infiltrated the submerged zones.

The floodwaters engulfed key areas, including the University of Maiduguri and its Teaching Hospital, as well as several districts like Gwange, Moromoro, and the 500 Abbagana Housing Estate. Iconic locations such as the NUJ Centre, Government House, Lagos Street, and the popular Monday Market were also severely impacted. The destruction has left property worth billions of naira in ruins.

The crisis intensified when the Alau Dam, located on the outskirts of Maiduguri, collapsed on Tuesday morning after days of overflowing due to heavy rainfall. The Borno State government had issued evacuation warnings last week, urging residents along the riverbanks to relocate to higher ground as the dam neared its breaking point.

Usman Tar, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, sounded the alarm: “Due to the unusually high volume of water this year, we urge all residents living along the river bank to take immediate action to protect themselves and their properties.”

Thousands of residents, forced to flee their homes, were seen moving to safer locations, such as Bulumkutu, Gomari Airport, and Tashan Baga. Meanwhile, some victims have called for urgent assistance from the government to provide shelter and relief during this critical time.

The situation has grown more dire with the temporary absence of Governor Babagana Zulum, who is currently out of the country, while his deputy, Umar Kadafur, is on annual leave. Despite the absence of top leadership, the state’s security agencies, including the police, have reassured the public that efforts are underway to ensure safety.

ASP Kenneth Daso, the Police Public Relations Officer for Borno, urged the public to remain vigilant: “We are working closely with other agencies to safeguard lives and property. Residents should remain calm but stay alert as we manage this critical situation.”

As the flooding continues to displace families and disrupt daily life, residents hope for swift government intervention to restore normalcy and prevent further loss of life and property.
