Customs Commence Distribution of Seized Food Items to Nigerians today

In a recent development, the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, has announced the initiation of the distribution of seized food items starting today. The move comes as part of the Nigerian Customs Service’s (NCS) efforts to directly provide essential items to eligible citizens.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Thursday, Adeniyi emphasized that the distributed food items are not to be resold. The initiative aims to curb profiteering and exploitation, with a stern warning against customs officers participating in the distribution.

The distribution will include 25kg bags of rice at a fixed price of N10,000. Adeniyi outlined the target groups, including artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies, and other Nigerians within the NCS operational areas. Eligible recipients must provide a Nigerian Identification Number.

National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, previously disclosed the service’s intention to directly distribute seized food items to Nigerians, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.

Adeniyi reiterated the commitment to transparency and accountability, stating, “We will not hesitate to take decisive action against any individuals or entities found to be in violation of the terms of this program.” He urged beneficiaries to report any misuse or unauthorized resale of the distributed food items.

Highlighting the economic challenges faced by Nigeria, Adeniyi emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing food security issues. The Customs General pointed out the unsustainable trend of essential items being diverted to neighboring countries, putting strain on the nation’s productive capacity.

The distribution exercise is a temporary measure by the NCS to dispose of seized food items. Adeniyi concluded by stating that the initiative aims to protect society by ensuring the availability of essential food items and urged citizens to comply with the guidelines to maximize the impact of the program.
