Customs to Use NIN for Food Distribution Amidst Hardship

Customs to Use NIN for Food Distribution Amidst Hardship

In a bid to address rising concerns over national food security, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has introduced a new criterion for collecting seized food items – the National Identity Number (NIN). The move comes as part of the government’s effort to counteract a concerning trend where large quantities of essential food items are being illicitly moved out of the country, leading to scarcity within Nigeria.

The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Wale Adeniyi, recently initiated the distribution of seized food items to vulnerable Nigerians, emphasizing the urgent need to safeguard the nation’s food security. The CGC pointed out that some individuals, deemed saboteurs, have been exporting food items massively, including grains, dried fish, cooking oil, and more. This outflow not only strains the country’s productive capacity but also poses a significant threat to its overall food security.

To combat this issue, the NCS has obtained government approval to sell the seized food items to needy Nigerians at discounted prices, specifically at N10,000 per 25kg bag of rice. The initiative aims to directly reach members of the community through organized structures, ensuring maximum impact. To maintain the integrity of the process, the NCS has implemented comprehensive security protocols and strict eligibility criteria, with officers closely monitoring the entire supply chain to prevent misuse or diversion.

The CGC emphasized that beneficiaries should not resell the items, and any incidents of misuse or unauthorized resale should be reported. The NCS is committed to transparency and accountability throughout the program and is prepared to take decisive action against any violations.

The NCS’s proactive approach underscores the importance of securing the nation’s food supply, urging citizens to collaborate in ensuring fair and equitable distribution.
